Photographic composition techniques.

This is a very interesting blog post, talking about composition of portraiture photographs and how to utilise the Fibonacci number sequence, explaining that they crop their photos to 1/1.618, similar to credit cards. The blog then goes to explain compositional hot points, drawing a line from corner to corner, then 45 degrees from the two remaining corners. Where these lines intersect are compositional hot spots.

Using this method they try to ensure that focal points of the image, in this case the models eyes, match to one of these points, drawing the viewer into the image and making it naturally appealing.

They also talk about utilising the Fibonacci spiral, or golden ratio, to guide the eyes around the image.

In terms of utilisation to my work, a lot of surrealist work parodies portraiture, reinforcing that what the viewer sees is alive, so knowing how to compose my shots to reflect this will be very useful.
